When autumn rolls around, apples start rolling in. The healthiest way to eat an apple might be to just eat the apple. But, when you have a bushel of apples, your mind starts to wonder, “what kind of apple dessert recipes could I bake with all of these apples?” This is a great time of year to experiment with some new apple dessert recipes or to whip up some of your favorite comforting warm apple crisps.
Apple pies are an American favorite. But sometimes the thought of making the perfect piecrust can paralyze the baker. Further, not everyone loves apple pie. Voila! The apple fruit crisp takes away the fear of creating the perfect piecrusts and replaces it with yummy brown sugar, buttery, oatmeal topping.
To peel or not to peel your apples? Tradition says that unpeeled apples give a more rustic appearance to your apple crisp; experience says that children don’t necessarily like baked apples with the peels left on. That is just something to think about.
Also, experience suggests that doubling the crumbly crust/topping recipe is perfectly acceptable if not preferred. That crunchy crumb topping might be the best part of the apple crisp, so no need to skimp.
So far we have revisited the typical apple dessert recipes: apple pie and apple crisp. Are there other ideas out there for baking with apples/what to do with your bushels of apples? Of course there are.
Homemade applesauce, for example, is such a treat. You maybe don’t know the difference between store bought and homemade yet, but if you’ve got plenty of apples, now would be a great time to find out! There is also “applesauce pie” as an option.
Kids enjoy an autumn apple salad with more crunch and creamy whipped topping mixed in. Of course, while the main ingredient in a Snicker’s Apple salad isn’t apples kids and adults both enjoy it.
